19 year old musician Tom Milsom, who has a huge You Tube following for his music, has started this experiment to see if we can influence the music charts just for this week of April 1 2009, by getting a song into the charts without the huge corporate music industry machine - simply by people power downloading the track online in the next 72 hours - starting April 1st!
The song is released under a persona of "Tommy Firefly" unknown to the Chart Compilers, and is a cover of a beautiful David Bowie track "The Prettiest Star" which has Tom's own unique interpretation, playing ukelele and accordion as well as vocals. This is Tom's video for the track - Turn your speakers up!
"The Prettiest Star" is available to be bought from iTunes, Amazon and all the other online sources - 90% of the new retail - and it is deliberately released on April 1st - a Wednesday - unlike most other tracks which come out on Mondays to hype the chart.
This way, avoiding the famous Tuesday "midweeks" which so influence programmers and press, Tom and his fans hope to play an April Fool's joke on the Chart Compilers, with the help of all his fans and friends on the Internet, and surprise the experts with a high chart placing on the first Sunday in April - the 5th.
Promotion is concentrating on You Tube and other online sites. Radio and TV would be a nice bonus (he has already appeared on The One Show - BBC1 - Thursday 29th January).
Why bother? To prove we can break the "old music industry" power over the charts, that concentrates on profits rather than good music.
Many of the great tracks of the past were individual hits and not serious career projects, until the big record companies got involved. Then the attention to albums and investment in career artistes lead to an abandonment of fun, enjoyable, mass appeal hits. Even though global smashes made a lot of money it wasn't enough to cover the costs of receptionists, secretaries, luxury offices, fruit and flowers. So corporations insisted on serious careers instead of happy hits.
But the internet can put an end to that corporate domination! With the internet great tracks can be huge hits again with virtually no hefty investment.
Tom would like to make some genuine, catchy, classy pop tracks as Tommy Firefly. He feels the time is perfect for joyous, melodic, interesting hits. The Prettiest Star is the first of these.
